Thank you for taking us along on your day trip to the western riviera. I’ve been to Noli; it is really unique and beautiful. Auguri on your olive oil sommelier achievement, and thanks for introducing us to Domenico. His dedication is admirable!

There are so many hidden gems and people to discover in Liguria!

I wonder if the trees I planted this year will be here 900 years from now now. That would be 30 generations caring for them, loving them even, and predicated on the uncertain viability of the earth we have been privileged to steward.

Hi Enrica, I so enjoyed your piece today, the coastal village, the lovely lunch Al fresco, and especially the piece about sr Ruffini and his colombaia olive trees and oils. It made my day! Great pictures too! My wife and I visited Finale Liguria 3 years ago and had a lovely lunch at I Quatru Canti (Im guessing at the spelling). Beautiful memory brought to light by your day trip! We considered moving to Italy, even Liguria, but….(a story for another day). SO, I decided to do the next best thing, create a tiny piece of Italy here by planting 22 olive trees on the terraced hillside by our house north of Los Angeles. Frantoio, Coratina, Leccino, Pendolino (for pollination). They are about 6 feet tall and flowering happily, even a few months after transplantation. They seem to like it here, I haven’t named them yet, but I might. Something about olive trees has captured my heart and imagination. Congratulations on your sommelier training! Do you have any advice on where and how to begin that journey? Thank you, Richard Lander

Richard! Thank you for sharing your love for Liguria and for EVO oil!! I hope the harvest will be great this year , though trees are young . I attended an online school becoming a sommelier, and they provided me 16 oil samples to taste together during classes. Maybe you can find something similar in the States!

Enrica, I love your beautiful article. Such a lovely tour of the more unknown side of Liguria (my preferred side if I'm to be honest). I love Noli as well; it's "our" beachside day trip town simply because it's the easiest to drive to from our house in Piemonte. And there's a dog beach. What's not to love!?!

Your visit with Domenico sounds just wonderful. That olive variety sounds interesting - some of my friends are not crazy about taggiasca olive oil as it's so mild. I do quite like it with certain Ligurian dishes.

Oh that gorgeous meal with herb filled ravioli. 🫶

Ligurian olive oil (sigh). I feel like the struggle is getting more and more difficult every year, with quantities ever deminishing. A couple of years ago I almost got caught up in flash fire that took off next to the ROI plantation in Badalucco. It was so dry and there was almost no rain the whole spring. No trees were destroyed but it came so close.

Speriamo bene. 🧡

I’m positive and believe that Ligurian oil producers will find ways of keeping and improving the production, there are still much progress to do!!
